Greg Suff E.V.A.

Greg was brought up in Brynmawr, a small town on the South Eastern edge of the Brecon Beacons national park. The dramatic surrounding countryside continues to have a big influence on his work – though this may not always be obvious.
Greg is self taught and started painting seriously in the 70’s. As he says, “Then I got a proper job” and returned to painting about the turn of the century.

Where others (probably advisedly) nurture a recognisable style and subject, or maybe go for a series of paintings related by some common theme, Greg prefers to pluck ideas from the ether, guided by the hand of some unseen muse….each painting stands on its own, mostly having no relation to any others. Except for the obvious exceptions of course.  Although he has no rules, he has no problem breaking them if it seems like a good idea at the time.

Greg doesn’t like talking about where his ideas come from or what they are about as this may spoil the viewer’s experience.
He claims he is an extreme egotist – like most artists, preferring to look at his own works rather than those of others. However, he has found the works of other artists a great influence -  Walt Disney, Alfred Bestall (illustrator of Rupert Bear), Ursulla Hourihane (The Tale of Julip), who showed him how to create unreal worlds in a realistic way.
Later J.W.Turner and John Martin showed him what they could do with oils.
